The official file rules
| Shape | Square: height equals width |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | At least 600 × 600 px, at most 1,200 × 1,200 px. This kit makes 600 × 600, the size the State Department’s own photo tool crops to. |
| File format | JPEG |
| File size | 240 kB or less |
| Colour | Colour, 24 bits per pixel, sRGB |

What the kit does not check
The kit guarantees the technical file rules above. It does not judge what the photo shows, such as background colour, lighting, expression, glasses or how recent the photo is. Those rules are listed on the official photo requirements page. Acceptance is always decided by the issuing authority.
Privacy
Your photo is processed inside your browser. It is never uploaded, and nothing is kept after you close the page. That matters for identity photos.
Frequently asked questions
Does this check my face, background or expression?
No. The kit makes sure the file meets the technical rules: size, format, file size, colour and compression. The rules about what the photo must show are on the State Department’s photo requirements page; read them before you take the photo.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Cropping, resizing and compressing all happen in your browser.
Can I use an iPhone HEIC photo?
Yes. The kit reads HEIC and outputs a JPEG, which is what the application requires.
Why 600 × 600 and not larger?
Any square size from 600 to 1,200 pixels is allowed. 600 × 600 is the size the State Department’s own tool produces and it fits under 240 kB comfortably at high quality.
Why does the kit check a minimum size too?
The rules limit compression to 20:1. A 600 × 600 colour image is 1,080,000 bytes uncompressed, so the JPEG must be at least about 54 kB. Squeezing it smaller can fail validation, so the kit checks both limits.
Will my photo definitely be accepted?
Acceptance is always decided by the US embassy or consulate. The kit removes the technical reasons for rejection.
