What BMP to PNG does
Saves each BMP as a PNG without changing a single pixel. PNG’s lossless compression usually makes the file much smaller, especially for screenshots and graphics.
When to use it
- You need an exact copy of a screenshot, diagram or icon in a modern format.
- A website or app accepts PNG but not BMP.
- You want smaller files without any quality loss.
Good to know
- Pixels are identical to the BMP.
- Graphics and screenshots shrink the most; photos shrink less. For photos, BMP to JPG gives far smaller files.

How much smaller will the PNG be?
It depends on the picture. Graphics and screenshots shrink the most; photos less. In our example an 8.6 MB BMP became a 4.3 MB PNG with exactly the same pixels.
