A Practical Guide to Editing Animated GIFs

GIFs behave differently from ordinary photos because they're really a sequence of frames stitched together. Here's what that means for resizing, compressing and sharing them well.

Why GIF editing needs its own tools

A regular photo editor only ever touches one canvas. A GIF editor has to repeat that same operation across every frame — sometimes dozens — while preserving each frame's exact timing, then re-encode the whole sequence back into one file. That's why resizing, cropping or speeding up a GIF needs a dedicated decoder and encoder rather than the simpler tools used for a single image.

The size lever that matters most

GIF file size scales with pixels per frame multiplied by frame count — so cutting the width in half can shrink a file to a quarter of its size, not just half. That makes resizing dimensions down, before touching compression quality at all, the single biggest lever for a GIF that's too large to share. 400-480px wide is a solid default for chat apps and embeds; push it higher only for full-width web use.

Speed, direction and looping

Beyond size, a GIF's frame delays control its pacing — speeding a screen-recording GIF up trims dead time without cutting content, while slowing one down can make a subtle motion easier to read. Reversing a GIF simply plays the same frames in the opposite order, which is a quick way to turn an ordinary clip into something unexpectedly funny. And the loop count — usually invisible unless you go looking — decides whether a GIF repeats forever, plays once, or loops a fixed number of times.
