How MP4-to-GIF conversion works

This tool runs a real video encoder — compiled to WebAssembly — directly in your browser tab. It decodes your MP4, samples it at the frame rate you choose, scales it to the target width, and writes out a looping GIF. The first run downloads the encoder (a one-time ~25MB fetch), after which conversion happens fully offline.

Lower frame rates and narrower widths convert faster and produce much smaller files — 10fps at 480px wide is a good starting point for sharing clips.

Choosing frame rate and width before converting

Video frame rates of 24-60fps are massive overkill for a GIF — 8-12fps is usually indistinguishable from higher rates for typical motion, while roughly halving or better the resulting file size. Only push the frame rate higher if the clip has fast, detailed motion, like sports footage, where lower rates start to look choppy.

Width behaves the same way it does for any GIF: 480px covers most sharing use cases, while anything approaching the source video's native resolution produces a GIF that's often larger than the original MP4 — at that point, sharing the video file directly is usually the better option. Trimming your clip to the essential few seconds before converting also helps enormously, since every additional second multiplies the frame count.

This tool loads a real video-encoding engine, compiled to WebAssembly, directly into your browser tab — the same kind of software a desktop video editor would use, just running inside a web page instead of installed on your computer. It decodes your MP4's video stream, samples frames at the rate you set, scales each one to your target width, and assembles the result into a GIF file, all without any server in between.

The engine itself is roughly 25MB and downloads once per browser session the first time you use any video tool on this site; after that first load, it's cached and later conversions start immediately.
