Why iPhone photos won't open everywhere
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default instead of JPG. HEIC uses a more modern compression method that produces roughly half the file size of a JPG at the same visual quality, which is exactly why Apple made the switch — significantly more photos fit in the same amount of phone storage or iCloud space.
The catch is compatibility. Windows didn't gain native HEIC support until relatively recently and often still requires an extra codec pack, many Android phones can't open it at all, and a long list of websites and older applications simply reject the file type outright. The most common moment this becomes a problem is transferring a photo off an iPhone to a Windows PC — the file arrives, but nothing can open it.
How this converter works
Apple's HEIC format isn't natively understood by most browsers, so this tool uses an open-source decoder (heic2any, built on libheif) that runs entirely inside your browser tab to read the HEIC data and re-encode it as a standard JPG. Because the decoding happens locally, your photo is never transmitted anywhere.
A tip for iPhone users
If you'd rather avoid this conversion step going forward: Settings → Camera → Formats → "Most Compatible" saves new photos as JPG automatically instead of HEIC. This tool remains useful for the photos already sitting on your phone or in a backup.
