How cropping an animated GIF works

Pick a target aspect ratio — Square, 16:9 or 4:5 — and the tool works out the largest region of that shape centered in your GIF, then crops every single frame to that same region before re-encoding the animation. Timing is preserved exactly.

This is handy for turning a wide screen-recording GIF into a square one for a chat app, or trimming black bars out of a clip before sharing it.

Picking the right aspect ratio

Square (1:1) is the safest default for messaging apps and forum avatars, since almost every platform displays square media without letterboxing. 16:9 suits a GIF captured from a widescreen video or screen recording, keeping the full width of a desktop app visible. 4:5 and 3:4 are portrait-leaning ratios that work well for GIFs meant to fill more of a phone screen, such as a story-style share.

Because the crop is always centered, it helps to think about where the action in your GIF sits before choosing a ratio — a wide screen recording with a cursor moving across the entire width will lose the edges when cropped to square, so 16:9 is the better fit in that case. When in doubt, try a couple of ratios; re-cropping from the original file only takes a few seconds.

How the crop is calculated

Once you choose a ratio, this tool works out the largest region of that shape that fits entirely inside your GIF's existing frame, centers it, and applies that exact same crop window to every frame in the sequence before re-encoding. Because the crop position is calculated once and reused for every frame, the subject stays consistently framed throughout the animation rather than drifting between frames.
